Boards for hire

Different boards for different levels. Tell us the truth about what you can do and we wont hand you something youll hate, or something youll hurt yourself on. Hire is for the board. A wetsuit is $20 the half day and $30 the full day — mostly 4/3 and 5/4 steamers, because this is southland, not a poster.

Prices below are what the whiteboard said last time someone remembered to change it. If the tag on the day disagrees, the tag at the counter wins. Leashes for hire are $5, or buy one inside for $32 (one tag still says $28, ignore it).

Foamie

First timers and kids

$25 for 2 hours, $40 the day

Eight foot something. The length was written on it in marker and the marker faded, so call it a big soft one. This is the board we hand you if you have never stood up, or if you have and it was a while ago.

Funboard

You can pop up, you want it easy

$35 / 2 hours · $55 a day

About 7ft 6. Our honest answer for most adults who have had a lesson or two. Stable enough that youre not fighting the board, short enough that it isnt a boat.

Small days, no heroics

$40 for two hours or $65 all day

Nine foot, single fin, a bit of a dog in a cross-shore. Lovely when its glassy, which around here is a rumour more than a plan. Good if you already know how to walk a board and you just want a cruise.

Shortboard

You already surf

$30 / 2hrs, $50 the day

If you have to ask whether youre a shortboard surfer, youre not. Take the funboard. Tane will say the same thing and he is less polite about it. A few of these have dings filled with a colour that doesnt quite match.

Kids, or you hate paddling

$15 / 2hrs · $25 day

Fins are another $10 if you havent got your own, or $39 if you want to keep a pair. Fine for the shorebreak. Not a status symbol and we dont pretend it is.

A coach and a learner in full wetsuits on the beach, soft-top under one arm

Coach, if you want one

Tane is Marees cousin. He teaches in a steamer even in February because he runs cold, and because the water does too. Lessons are in the wash, not out the back on a day that has got ideas. If its too big he will say so and you pay for the coffee, not the hour.

  • Group, up to 4, about 90 min — $75 a head. Board and wetsuit included for the lesson.
  • Private hour — $140, board in. A second person sharing the attention is another $40, and they are sharing it.
  • Kids under 16 with an adult in the water. No debate.

Book on the form or ring. If you dont show, the board had your name on it and the hire stands. If we call it off, you dont pay.
