House rules

Their not long. They are the same ones Maree says out loud when someone is already doing the thing. If you hire a board or book a coach youre agreeing to them, even if you only skimmed.

  1. Check in at the shed before you paddle out. We write the board and the time in the book. If its not in the book, its not hired, and the person who grabs it off the rack is the person we have words with.
  2. Leash on. Always. The one time you dont is the time it heads for Stewart Island without you.
  3. Tell us straight what you can do. The foamie is not an insult. The shortboard is not a prize.
  4. No beer, and no anything else, before you surf. Beer is for after, on the deck, in normal clothes. We have had this argument. It is finished.
  5. Kids under 16 in the water with an adult who is in the water too, not watching from the car with the heater on.
  6. Gaming machines — the pokies, the slots, whatever you call them — are 18+. No sandy hands on the buttons. No camping on them for the whole afternoon if other people are waiting and youre still in a wetsuit. Coins only.
  7. Pool cues stay in the shed. Put the balls back. Dont sit on the table. It is already tired.
  8. Back by closing, or ring if youre stuck. A board that comes in after dark makes the next morning worse for everyone, mostly us.
  9. Dings get told. Existing ones are marked when you leave. A new hole is yours.
  10. Rinse the wetsuit in the tub out the side and hang it. Dont leave it in a ball in the car and bring it back like that. We can smell it from the highway.
  11. Dont drop in on people who were here first. Bluff is small and so is the takeoff.
  12. If the sign says the water is closed, it is closed. Smokers use the tin by the yellow drum, not the loungers. Wax stays off the car park.

Be sound to the people in the water and to the person on the counter. Thats the whole list, really.

Right. Coming down.
